Summary: | A set of precise jig & fixture is required to fulfill the geometry tolerance requirement of injection needle. Because of the manufacturing limitation, a stack tolerance analysis should be done before production. In this report, a jig & fixture for grinding an injection needle has been made to grind needle to reach the geometry specification.

In this research, the design process started from studying the current injection needle grinding mechanism, simulating grinding process in Autodesk Inventor software to determine the tolerance budget, then re-desiging the set of jig & fixture, including the mechanical and electrical compensation. Component selection is critical, therefore purchasing standard components from Misumi should be done to accommodate components which require tight tolerance. The whole grinding process is designed to be automated to reduce the risk of human error.

The stack tolerance analysis shows that by having the compensations, the over-budgeted stacked tolerance can be lowered until below the tolerance budget, therefore the geometric requirement for the needle can be achieved.
