Summary: | Abstract: Contamination of heavy metals and Total Suspended Solid (TSS) in urban storm water could be the source of environmental pollutions. Therefore, a technology is needed to remove those contaminants before the stormwater enters the environment. Bioretention has been proven to be able to reduce the volume of stormwater and also has potential to eliminate heavy metals and TSS from urban stormwater before the stormwater enters the environment. This study will be discussing about the removal efficiency of TSS and heavy metals, especially copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn), which became the most contaminating heavy metals in stormwater from the study area, Dago Bandung, using biofilter as the lab scale of bioretention. This study also discussed about the influence of inflow rate variation in the ability of the biofilter to remove the pollutants. This research was conducted in such a way to approach the real condition so the influent being used in this research is the natural urban stormwater and the variations of inflow rate are based on the variations in light rain, medium rain, and heavy rain according to the rainy conditions in the study area. Other factors that could affect the removal such as soil moisture content and pH were also measured. The results showed that the removal of TSS in urban stormwater using biofilter is not only influenced by the discharge rate but also influenced by moisture content. Beside, the removal of heavy metals are also not only influenced by the discharge but also influenced by the media filter, vegetation, as well as the pH condition. Overall, biofilter was able to eliminate pollutants contained in stormwater fairly well even in conditions of heavy rain |
