Installing fault current limiters in power system is an effective way to suppress fault currents and the result inconsiderable saving in the investment than procurement of high capacity circuit breakers. This paper presents a method that based on genetic algorithm mechanism to determine optimum numbers and locations for FCL placement in Jawa Bali system to maintain short-circuit currents under existing circuit breaker’s interrupting rating by using smallest number of FCL. In the proposed approach, genetic algorithm method is employed to find the best location and smallest fault current limiter. The result of this paper show the recommendation of number and location of fault current limiter that would install in Jawa Bali system so that the value of short circuit current is under existing circuit breaker's rating. text
