Using renewable resources such as plants as sustainable energy source and raw materials for industry is thought to be one of the solutions to this problem. Beauty leaf (Calophyllum inophyllum) is an inedible feedstock and has great potential as a source of oilseed in Indonesia. Up until now, the method which is often used for collecting oil from natural resources is extraction. Oilseed will be used to produce biodiesel through conventional method of transesterification. This method consists of several steps so that the production of biodiesel costs a lot. Methanol and potassium hydroxide are added to the extraction solvent as reactant and catalyst for in-situ transesterifition. The extraction time varies from 2-6 hours, meanwhile the particle size of beuty leaf seed used varies from 4-16 mesh. The amount of the methanol added is equivalent to 1 and 1,5 times stoichiometrically. The catalyst concetration used is 0,05-0,1 mol/L. The acid number, saponification value, and iod number of the oilseed are tested and then compared to the standard value for diesel fuel according to SNI.

The beauty leaf oilseed extraction is conducted at the temperature of 65°C with 8:1 solvent-to-feed ratio. The most effective extraction was held for 4 hours with the beauty leaf seed particle size of 16 mesh. The oilseed extracted still has high acid velue so it does not meet the value required for acid value. The beauty leaf oilseed extraction in effective condition with the addition of methanol equivalent to 1,5 times stoichiometrically and potassium hydroxide as much as 0,1 mol/L successfully decrease the acid number from 33 mg KOH/g to 13 mg KOH/g. Nevertheless, the acid number of 13 mg KOH/g is still higher than that of the standard for diesel fuel according to SNI. text
