Description
Summary:One of the earliest indication of high voltage electrical isolation failure is marked by a Partial Discharge (PD) occurrence. Therefore, a method of early detection is required. The advantages of PD detection in the Ultrawide Band (UWB) frequency range is can make a more accurate observation of the shape of the PD pulse. Matching impedance circuit is used as a method to measure PD signal in UWB frequency range. To maximize the power transfer of the PD current, the impedance value of the circuit characteristic is 50 Ω which is the impedance characteristic of coaxial cable and internal osciloscope as coupling device.

In this thesis report, the design and implementation of coupling device in the form of matching impedance circuit consisting of attenuator as detector impedance and UWB amplifier as signal amplifier. The circuit design is done by modeling and simulating the Advanced Design System 2014 (ADS2014) software to know the circuit characteristics with S-Parameter simulation. The result of circuit implementation is tested using Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) and shows characteristics that resemble the simulation result. The circuit is then used for PD measurements in a high voltage laboratory with a needle-plate electrode test object.

Measurement of PD characteristics in the form of background noise (BGN), PD Inseption Voltage, and PD wave measurements were performed at the Tegangan Tinggi Arus Tinggi Laboratory - ITB. The result of PD measurement in air isolation media shows that the PD detection circuit uses Pi-Attenuator circuit and Monolithic Microwave Integrated Circuit (MMIC) type amplifier code MGA-82563 able to measure PD wave characteristics in the ultrawide band frequency range.
