Description
Summary:Corrosion due to CO2 is a common problem in oil and gas transportation systems. The presence of CO2 gas is will not be a problem if it’s not dissolves in water. However, in practice it’s often found the presence of CO2 dissolved in water and reacts to form H2CO3 which can trigger a corrosion reaction in the material for oil and gas transport system. In this research, we conducted a study of the effect of CO2 dissolved in water on fatigue resistance behavior for low carbon steel material at room temperature and open conditions. Using a low carbon steel material, the test is carried out at a maximum stress value of 259 MPa, 294 MPa, 331 MPa, 365 MPa, and 394 MPa to study the value of fatigue life material while in laboratory environment and CO2 environment. Study of the environmental influence on endurance limit values on the material was done using maximum stress value of 200 MPa, 195 MPa, and 190 MPa in laboratory environment and 190 MPa, 170 MPa, and 150 MPa in environment containing dissolved CO2. The results of the test are shown in the S-N curve and photo fractography observed using stereo and SEM microscopes. Characterization was performed using EDS to identify and predict the corrosion product formed on the fracture surface of the material. The results of the test show a decrease in both of fatigue life and endurance limit values of low carbon steel material when tested in an environment containing CO2 dissolved in water. Fractographic results also show that the fracture surfaces of specimens tested on the CO2 environment will be partially covered by corrosion products.
