The use of walking modes is an effort to encourage the shift of private vehicle use to sustainable transportation mode. Promotion of walking activities can be done by applying the concept of walkability through infrastructure improvement of pedestrian facilities. The pedestrian level of service (PLOS) is the most common approach to assessing the quality of pedestrian facility operations.

The method of evaluation of PLOS used in this final project are HCM (2000), Trip Quality (Jazkiewicz, 1999), Gainesville (Dixon, 1996), and Australian (Main Roads WA, 2006) with focus on pedestrian facilities study limited to sidewalk and walkway in Bandung Institute of Technology area. Data collection techniques used consisted of traffic counting and observation.

Improvement recommendations are given to poorly rated performance indicators in the PLOS evaluation. The result obtained from PLOS evaluation is sidewalk and walkway in ITB area still needs improvement on some performance indicator such as effective width, lighting, access and supporting facility, crossing facilities, and potential conflict with vehicle. text
