THE DEVELOPMENT OF AIR FILTER TEST SYSTEM

Air filter has been applied widely for various purposes e.g. industrial particulate matter filtration, clean room filtration, and aerosol sampling. The filter quality is determined by some factors e.g. pressure drop, efficiency, and quality factor. The commercil apparatus to measure these parameters...

The filter quality is determined by some factors e.g. pressure drop, efficiency, and quality factor. The commercil apparatus to measure these parameters was expensive and limited so that it become a barrier to improve air filter research in Indonesia. Therefore, the development of a simple and low cost air filter test system using PSL (polystyrene latex) particle was proposed. The polystyrene latex (PSL) sphere has perfect spherical shape and high size uniformity. Because of its superior geometrical properties, the PSL sphere can be used for air filter test system. For this purpose, the PSL sphere in the suspension must be converted into an aerosol by some methods such as atomization process. The characterization and optimization of the PSL aerosol which was generated by the atomizer was done using condensation particle counter (CPC), optical particle counter (OPC), and ion counter. It was found that the atomization process generates a bipolar charge on the PSL aerosol in which the number of the charged PSL aerosol was significantly higher than the neutral aerosol. Moreover, the atomizer flow rate and suspension concentration affected the number of generated PSL aerosol as well as the agglomeration. The test on commercial and PAN nanofiber filters showed that the system has good performance to measure filtration parameters. text
