Description
Summary:Clinacanthus nutans (dandang gendis) is widely used as a traditional diabetic drug. Sugiri(1) had investigated that the water extract of the leaves of Clinacanthusnutans had a hypoglycaemic activity of about 64,77% that of tolbutamide. Analysis of the extract of the leaves of Clinacanthus nutans in various solvents showed the presence of alkaloid, flavonoid and terpenoid. From the n-hexane extract after purification white amorphous solid was obtanied with the m.p of 125-127°C, and showed positive test with Liebermann-Burchard reagent and doesn\'t inhibit the growth of either Aspergillus niger or Escherichia coli. IR spectral data showed the presence of a secondary alcoholic and gem dimethyl groups and the absence of carbonyl group. Therefore it could not be an acetate derivative. It absorbs at ζ-max(MeOH) = 210 nm and has a molecular weight of 426 as obtain from mass spectral data. The mass spectrum also showed the absence of either ζ-amyrin or lupeol skeleton. It can be concluded then that this compound, isolated from the leaves of Clinacanthus nutans has a molecular weight of 426, having secondary alcoholic and gem dimethyl groups, it is not bound as an acetate and it is neither an ζ-amyrin nor a lupeol. The structure of the compound is still to be investigated in further work.
