COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF SAND AND CERAMIC PROPPANT PERFORMANCE IN HYDRAULIC FRACTURING TREATMENT FOR COAL BED METHANE WELL IN INDONESIA

Indonesia has an abundant potential of unconventional hydrocarbon such as Coal Bed Methane (CBM). According to Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Indonesia has potential 453 TCF of CBM which is divided into 11 basins on the island of Sumatra, Kalimantan, Java, and Sulawesi. CBM development is...

Propan as a material to keep the fractire open has an important role in determining the quality of fractures formed. Therefore, the selection of propane type and concentration as well as propane injection rate must be considered in the design of hydraulic fracturing. The purpose of this study is to explain the effect of proppant types, proppant concentration, and injection rate as well towards the conductivity of fracture and productivity of the CBM well. Besides, this study will explain the performance of sand proppant and ceramic proppant on CBM well X which is located in Indonesia. This study is a comprehensive study from literatures such as books, papers, and publication, as well as simulation which uses petroleum software to design fracture.

At the end of the study, it can be summarized that sand proppant has a better performance in terms of longer half fracture length, higher folds of increase, and lower injection rate to achieve optimum condition. Those can be achieved not only because of shallower depth of the formation, but also because sand proppant has lower density thus it can prevent premature settling. Besides, it is important to remember that sand proppant is cheaper than ceramic proppant. Thus, sand proppant is more favorable in hydraulic fracturing treatment on CBM well X. text
