Summary: | Material has now analysed more specifically on its dynamic characteristics due to technology advances. To get a better understanding on material characteristics while receiving impact loading, a high-strain rate test need to be conducted. Split-Hopkinson Pressure Bar (SHPB) is a method commonly used for a high-strain rate testing. SHPB itself has various methods: compression, tension, shear, torsional, and multiaxial.

In shear method, namely Split-Hopkinson Shear Bar (SHSB), the result becomes a complementary tool to the standard tensile tests for sheet metals and can be used to verify or identify the plastic criterion of sheet metals. There are three methods of SHSB already known and hat-shaped becomes the most common of all. Although SHPB and all its variants have been developed for years and becomes more useful, the standardization for the testing has not been created yet. In order to create the testing standard, some numerical simulations need to be conducted.
Numerical simulations have been conducted using Abaqus on a specimen of aluminium 2024-T351 and have been compared to an experimental result to assure its validation. Simulations varied on the dimension of specimen and the impact velocity. After comparing the shear stress-shear strain curves, specimen which gives the most satisfying result should have L < 9,9 mm or length-to-depth ratio L/d < 1.19 and angle of shear area of ?? 20°.
