Summary: | Ricinoleic acid, the main component of castor oil (87-90%) from a castor (Ricinus communis) plant seeds used as raw materials in the industry because it could undergo many chemical reactions. Ricinoleic acid consists of carboxylic, alcohol, and alkene groups, that can be tranformed to various building blocks. One of the products of ricinoleic acid tranformation was oligoricinoleic that could be applied as drug delivery device. Ricinoleic acid obtained from castor oil hydrolysis by KOH in ethanol under reflux for 4 hours. Ricinoleic acid isolation from a mixture of fatty acids in castor oil was done through winterization where the separation is based on ricinoleic acid solubility in ether. Ricinoleic acid obtained through the purification method using methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) has a yield of 30,0 %. Furthermore the ricinoleic acid derivative was synthesized by reaction of ricinoleic acid with thionyl chloride (SOCl2) reagent at a temperature of -5 °C for 4 hours and continued reflux at 40 °C for 24 hours. The purification of main product by column chromatography furnished chlororicinoleic acid with a yield of 9.1%. The product was characterized by FTIR and NMR (1H-NMR and 13C-NMR). |
