Summary: | The study area is located at coastal and marine area of Serdang Bedagai Region, Sumatra Utara in the Strait of Malacca. This area is a part of the territory, which planned to build an infrastructure such as piers. Therefore, it is necessary to get geological information, especially about engineering properties to know the
bearing capacity of materials before construction started. The analysis methods are based on the laboratory data in the form of physical and mechanical properties as well as SPT value to calculate the bearing capacity value of the sediment. The study area consists of three units, which are Sand Unit, Clayey Sand Unit and Sandy Clay Unit. The allowable bearing capacity value of shallow foundation for strip and square foundation at 0–12 m depth in BH-1 borehole is 0–2.7 ton/m2 while in BH-2 borehole is 0–19.3 ton/m2. The allowable bearing capacity value of deep foundation in the form of driven pile with round shaped at

0–70 m depth in BH-1 borehole is 0.4–300 ton while in BH-2 borehole is 0–398.5 ton and with square shaped at 0–70 m depth in BH-1 borehole is 0.5–382 ton while in BH-2 borehole is 0–507 ton. The allowable load value with maximum settlement about 2 inches in BH-1 borehole is 0.07–0.93 ton/m2 while in BH-2 borehole is 0.21–0.50 ton/m2. The low value of allowable load is because the sediment has not compacted yet. The soil type and presence of clay mineral have effects to bearing capacity values.

The cohesionless soil will give higher value of bearing capacity than the cohesive one. The presence of clay mineral makes the bearing capacity value become lower. |
