The weight of overburden sediments above a producing formation is supported partially by the rock matrix and partially by the pressurized fluid within the rock pore space. When the fluid pressure is reduced, more of the load is transferred to the rock matrix, and the formation is compacted. Rock compaction causes problems in multiple scales. For instance, compaction can reduce formation porosity and permeability, affecting long-term hydrocarbon production from the reservoir. Compaction can also deform well tubular, creating operational problems and shortening well lives. If compaction is significant, it can cause subsidence of the ocean floor, leading to severe safety problems for offshore platforms. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Permanent abandonment is defined as a well status, where the well is abandoned and will not be used or re-entered again. Permanently abandoned wells shall be plugged with an eternal perspective taking into account the effects of any foreseeable chemical and geological processes. The eternal perspective with regards to re-charge of formation pressure shall be verified and documented [1]. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> Output of this study is a workflow for a permanent well abandonment operation in a subsidence formation. This workflow consists of the analysis of well configuration, well barriers for abandonment operation, and lithology of the formation. Thus, the plugging material placement and length required in the abandonment operation could be determined. This workflow ended up with the construction of well abandonment schematic to represent the complete well abandonment design. It had been proposed for a subsidence offshore field in Indonesia. With this workflow, the well could safely be abandoned and the vegetation surrounding the offshore environment will not be harmed. <br /> text |
