Summary:The existence of urban kampong (Bandung local neighborhoods) and higher education are closely associated with the development of Bandung as a city. Formerly, the urban kampong are built on land owned through unofficially legal process, and are characterized for high population density, lack of infrastructure, facilities, and low environmental qualities as well as. The development of Higher Education triggers the rise of regional economic growth activities that support the students’ needs. These neighborhoods, concentrated around higher education area, spread all over Bandung region, yet, and change their characteristics from the ordinary neighborhood. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> This study aimed to identify the characteristics of urban kampong located around the higher education facilities. It focused to observe the transformation phenomena on the characteristics of urban kampong such as social, economic, environmental and legality. Then, it was taken to be comparison to the ordinary urban kampong. The study area was Sekelola Village, as the urban neighborhood located around the higher education facilities. Then, the comparator village was Sukamiskin. The study took the permanent domestic residents and students who live within these local neighborhoods. This study applied mix-method of descriptive statistics and qualitative as research design. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> The study found that there are several distinction characteristics for neighborhood that located around higher education, i.e.: (1). Beside of the permanent domestic residents, there are a large number of students who live this neighborhood by renting, moving to, and so on, (2). The major profession within this neighborhood is private sector and enterpriser, i.e. the land-lord who rent their home for in monthly or annually non-permanent guest house (i.e. a room for rent to students, stationary facilities, and so on), (3). Then, local residents, who converted their homes’ room into room for rent to students, monthly or annually, or non-permanent guest house, see this opportunity as their benefit investments, (4). Furthermore, some residents property own Freehold Title (Sertifikat Hak Milik), however, some residents still on Certificate Broking (Sertifikat Hak Guna Bangunan) of Bandung, and, then, some residents owned by Padjajaran University property, (5). The facilities and infrastructures, which are built for supporting the students, are massively adequate, as matter of effect, it consequently impact to reduce the city green spaces. These distinctions indicated that there is relationship between neighborhood of Bandung urban kampong and higher education activity. Thus, these distinctions shifted the characteristics of Sekeloa as urban kampong from the ordinary urban kampong.
