Summary: | Rock around the groundwater seep and spring that occur in the spillway of Setupatok Dam was grouted in 2014, but the leak discharge does not decrease. Initially, it was suspected that the leak occurred due to the age of the dam that has reached 90 years. This study is conducted to prove that the leak is controlled by the geological conditions around the dam. The base rock of reservoir is a crater of ancient volcano (maar type) at the foot of Mount Careme. Maar crater is the result of interaction between hot magma and water that produce pyroclastic deposit, dominated by lapilli size (up to 64 mm in diameter). <br />

The methods used in this research is geological mapping to find out the distribution of pyroclastic rock deposition, hydrogeological mapping to know the direction of groundwater flow (86 wells and 24 springs), and measurement of TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and pH to suppport the interpretation of groundwater flow. Based on the geological mapping, it is known that rock units around the Setupatok Dam are dominated by lapillistone and tuff that have high hydraulic conductivity values. There are two normal faults in this area. Based on the hydrogeological mapping, there are three zones with groundwater flow that indicate the leak of the reservoir. The TDS data show that springs on downstream are from the reservoir. Based on this fact, foundation treatment should be made by reducing the hydraulic conductivity value of the rock in the upstreams of the spillway. The proposed improvement simulation was performed using SEEP/W 2007. |
