DETERMINATION OF RADIATED SEISMIC ENERGY USING S-WAVE PHASE BASED ON VOLCANIC TECTONIC – A EARTHQUAKE RECORDS FROM THE ACTIVITY OF MOUNT SINABUNG PERIOD OF OCTOBER 2010 TO MAY 2011

Mount Sinabung is a strato type volcano, located in Karo District, North Sumatra Province, Indonesia. This mountain is one of the most active volcano in Indonesia since its first eruption on August 27, 2010 and the increase of volcano status into Awas (Level IV) in November 2013. Monitoring efforts...

This mountain is one of the most active volcano in Indonesia since its first eruption on August 27, 2010 and the increase of volcano status into Awas (Level IV) in November 2013. Monitoring efforts of Mount Sinabung continue to be done for disaster mitigation purposes. Volcanic monitoring can be done by looking at the energy value of each volcano earthquake. Magmatic activity lead the micro earthquakes in the volcano and the energy can illustrate how much force the resulting mechanism at the source of the earthquake occurred. In this research, energy calculation was estimated in frequency domain by using S-wave phase and calculation of magnitude was calculated using local magnitude equation for velocity seismometer short period. Seismic records data was obtained from the Center of Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation. The supporting data in the form of energy catalog Sinabung 2010-2011 and hyposenter earthquake catalog of Sinabung 2010-2011. Energy calculations are based on earthquakes available in the hypocenter catalog. Energy calculations show large earthquakes occurring in areas close to the minor faults in the north and northwest of Sinabung. There are two types of events that occur in this period, namely distal volcano-tectonic and volacnotectonic A (VT-A). Distal earthquakes appear due to the indication of magma movement from the southwest to the northeast which resulted in the emphasis on the weak zone around Sinabung. The seismic energy of Mount Sinabung activity during this period ranged from 2.993 x 105 ~ 4.34 x 1017 erg. In addition, in this study also found the relationship between energy and magnitude in the area of Mount Sinabung, namely: log (E) = 2.8621M + 8.416. This research contributes to the mitigation efforts of volcanic disaster in Sinabung. text
