The Effect of Microbial Content of Compost from Fruit Waste Bioconversion Residue by Black Soldier Fly Larvae (Hermetia illucens) on Green Lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) Growth
Black Soldier Fly (BSF; Hermetia illucens) is a type of insect that in their larva stage can be used as organic matter bioconversion agent. The solid residue generated from their bioconversion process can be decomposed and act as compost on growing media to enrich the microbial activity in the soil....

A research was conducted to determine the effect of microbial content of the BSF residue compost on green lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) growth in ITB Jatinangor’s screen house. The green lettuce plants were treated by mixture of soil and BSF residue compost with ratio of 1:1 and 3:1, mixture of soil and commercial compost with ratio of 1:1 and 3:1, and only soil as control treatment. The treatments were repeated five times consisted of six plant individuals in each repetition. A microbial content test also conducted in BALITSA Laboratory, Lembang to determine the presence and total of aerobic microbes, nitrogen fixation bacteria, phosphor solubilizing bacteria, and actinomycetes in both composts. The microbial content test showed that the BSF residue compost contained <30 CFU/g of actinomycetes, <30 CFU/g of nitrogen fixation bacteria, and >30x103 CFU/g of total aerobic microbes, and the commercial compost contained <30 CFU/g of actinomycetes, and >30x103 CFU/g of total aerobic microbes. Result showed that mixture of soil and BSF residue compost with ratio of 1:1 gave the highest results of average plant height (19,78 + 2,82 cm), number of leaves per plant (12,6 + 2,51 cm), leaf area (148,38 + 45,48 cm), and shoot weight (76,99 + 23,8 gram). Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) test also showed that this treatment gave the best and the most significant result than the other treatments given (Tukey test P<0,05). text |
