Description
Summary:Looking at the structure of ethyl ferulate, one way to discover a pretarget in the synthesis of the ester is that by breaking the double bond of side chain and through is way vanilin may be assum to be the most approriate rretarget. Condensation of vanilin with ethyl acetate using sodium as catalyst at 5°C didnot gave a condensation pro-duct large enough for effective separation. On the other hand, ethyl ferulate had been obtained by a direct synthesis through condensation of vanilin and monoethyl malonate, using piperidine as catalyst in pyridine solution. The reaction proceeded at room temperature for 48 hours follow by heating at 50°C for 48 hours. The ethyl ferulate thus obtained proof to be the trans assume of ethyl ferulate with were concluded based an its chemical reactions, chromatography charactesistic, and spectroscopic data. This condensation gave 83% yield of ethyl ferulate calculated from monoethyl malonate used or 53; calculated based on the originil malonic acid used. For these synthesis purposes, monoethyl malonate prepared from diethyl malonate and diethyl malonate from malonic acid.
