The Effect of Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) Leachate and Greywater Mixture in Chinese Cabbage (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis) Growth using Hidroponic Wick System

Interest of urban community to produce their own food and consumption increase of vegetables especially Chinese cabbage are quite high. Despite having a fairly high pH, household waste such as Greywater is thought to be used in agricultural activities. Hydroponic system can be applied in urban areas...

Hydroponic system can be applied in urban areas, but the nutritional choices are limited. Therefore, the solution using alternative sources of nutrients through black soldier fly (BSF) leachate is formulated. This research is to determine the effect of BSF leachate and greywater mixture on the Chinese cabbage growth and to determine the best proportion of BSF leachate and greywater mixture in enhancing the plant growth.

The research used five treatments, 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% BSF leachate in AB Mix 1500 ml mixed with 500 ml greywater. It was conducted with six replications. Growth parameters such as height, leaf amount, wet weight, and dry weight was measured. Nutrient solution characteristics such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen (DO), and total dissolved solid (TDS) of the nutrient solution, as well as microclimate factors such as air temperature, humidity and solar intensity was also measured. Measurements were taken every three days for 30 days. Plant growth data were analyzed using a randomized block design using IRRI STAR computer software. Correlation between the characteristics of nutrient solution to the plant growth were also analyzed using pearson method.

The result is, BSF leachate and greywater mixture have significant effect to the leaf amount and plant biomass, but have no significant effect to the plant height. Mixture of 0% BSF treatment turned out to have a better effect than the one with higher concentration. Significant correlation of pH, temperature, DO, and TDS nutrient solution against stem height, leaf number, and caisim biomass also observed. text
