Description
Summary:The aim of this study was to determine the effect of hydroxy radical compound on lutein and carotenoid accumulation, biomass production, and productivity of lutein and carotenoid in Chlorella pyrenoidosa. Variations of hydroxy radical concentration used were 0.01 mM, 0.1 mM, 1.0 mM, and with no addition of OH* as control. In this study, culture cultivation period of C. pyrenoidosa was 16 days. Microalgae culture was extracted using aseton as organic solvent. Carotenoid content in cell was quantified using Lichentaler and Buschman’s method (2001) and lutein content in cell was quantified using Oliveira’s method (2010). The results indicated that the addition of hydroxy radical significantly increased carotenoid concentration in culture of C. pyrenoidosa. The enhancement of lutein and carotenoids were 117.8% and 112.7%, respectively, with the addition of 0.1 mM OH* on the 4th day of cultivation. The maximum lutein productivity was 68 mg/L/year and maximum carotenoid productivity was 297 mg/L/year which obtained in microalgae with the addition of OH* 0.01 mM.
