Description
Summary:Building electricity consumption contributes high portion of total energy consumed in the word. The electricity usage in educational buildings is highly depends on the behavior of the students, driven by a variety of factors, such as lifestyles and habits. But there is an opportunity to reduce electricity consumed by implementing Internet of Things (IoT) and Persuasive Technology. This thesis describes the development of persuasive web application that aims to increase student awareness in using energy. Other objective is to see and compare which principles in persuasive technology are more effective. The experiment involved 21 students divided by 3 groups as participant. Smart plug was installed on their computer to monitor their energy usage. Each group was shown different kind of web application displays to see the effect of different principles employed by those displays. Beside a quantitative analysis by calculating energy saving during experiment, a feedback questionnaire was used to obtain an opinion from participants. The main result of this research is a visible reduction on energy usage during all three phases by average 11, 06 %. The highest reduction was obtained by students shown by display that implemented social learning, social comparison, competition, and reward principles.
