Description
Summary:Strong historical background and cultural differences in every city or region in Indonesia can be a very potential element or value that can be used as a basic material for the development of public open spaces to a better condition. The existence of these elements, such as buildings, can be a positive effect that can provide positive energy to the public spaces that it formed (Samadi, Bakri, & Azhari, 2012). Active public spaces are located between buildings (Gehl, 1987). As a big city while having ethnic and cultural diversity, Medan does not yet have a convenient public open space for tourists to learn about the city's history and also as a place to interact in a decent city space. In this thesis, the study focused on the influence of cultural diversity in forming the genius loci of an open space area and its influence in shaping public space. By adopting the method that has been done by Norberg-Schultz in tracing the spirit of place and genius loci, hence the research of history of the site that associated with phenomenon that happened in this area, we found the influence of cultural diversity in forming the character of the site studies. These findings then used to design public open spaces which showed the characteristic of the area and linked the buildings and historic areas within Medan.
