Summary: | The experiment was done to determine the effect of singlet oxygen in different concentrations to growth kinetics, lutein concentration, and carotenoid concentration of C. pyrenoidosa. C. pyrenoidosa inoculum was cultured for 16 days with different concentrations of singlet oxygen (0,01 mM; 0,1 mM; 1,0 mM) and without singlet oxygen (control). Culture with low concentration of singlet oxygen (0,01 mM) showed significantly better growth and significantly higher lutein and carotenoid content than other concentration (0,1 mM and 1,0 mM) and control. Singlet oxygen with concentration of 0,1 and 1,0 mM showed retardation of growth, lutein content, and carotenoid content. Productivity analysis of both lutein and carotenoid showed that culture with 0,01 mM singlet oxygen in the tenth day of cultivation had the highest productivity. From this study it can be concluded that the addition of singlet oxygen in culture of C. pyrenoidosa with a concentration of 0.01 mM leads to better growth and higher lutein and carotenoid content than without it, whereas administration with higher concentration (1,0 mM) causes induction to programmed cell death (PCD) that inhibits the growth and production of lutein and carotenoids. |
