Summary: | Fruits are important food to be consumed because it contains sugars, minerals, fiber, and vitamins needed by the body. However, for hemodialysis patients should note the ammount of fruits because of the limitation in mineral intake to prevent excess ion levels in serum. Therefore it is necessary to calculate the portion of fruit that could be consumed by hemodialysis patients. This study aims to calculate the amounts of selected fruits that can be consumed per day by hemodialysis patients based on potassium, magnesium, and sodium contents of the fruits. A total of 10 different types of fruits were selected as samples for measured levels of potassium, magnesium, and sodium contained therein. The fruits are apple, banana, guava, litchi, mango, papaya, naseberry, orange, pear, and watermelon. The samples which have been peeled and separated from its seeds are dried at 60°C until fixed weight and heated at furnace at 540°C before dissolved with acid. The resultant filtration solution was then added with aqua bidestillata and was analyzed using atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Magnesium contents from 10 different types of fruits range between 4,089-18,257 mg/100 g;. Potassium contents from 10 different types of fruits range between 29,831–232,132 mg/100 g. Sodium contents from 10 different types of fruits range between 1,183-5,003 mg/100 g. Amounts of fruits which could be consumed by hemodialysis patient per day range between 86,138-670,443 g/day, depending on the type of fruit; watermelon is the one which relatively safest to be consumed in high amount while litchi consumption should be limited for hemodialysis patient. |
