The identification of the Double Vortex phenomena was carried out using daily wind reanalysis data from the National Centers for Enviromental Prediction-National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP-NCAR) during 2005/2006 to 2015/2016. Furthermore, a spatial rainfall data composite was made using Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) satellite data at the time of occurrence of the Double Vortex phenomena. An analysis of rainfall intensity from 16 surface observation stations, which spread across the western and central part of Indonesia, also was done to support these results.

The identification of Double Vortex results show 56 Double Vortex occurred during the study period. The rainfall analysis of the TRMM data composite shows a positive anomaly in the eastern Indian Ocean, some part of Sumatra Island and the west coast of Kalimantan Island. Furthermore, the analysis of surface observation data shows an increase in rainfall intensity during the Double Vortex occurrence, especially in Padang, Bengkulu and Palembang stations. In the other hand, there is a significant decrease in rainfall intensity in Java Island after Double Vortex due to the weakening of cross equatorial flow as an influence of the northern vortex in the Eastern Indian Ocean. text |
