STUDY OF STANDARDIZED PRECIPITATION INDEX (SPI) AND NORMALIZED DIFFERENCE VEGETATION INDEX (NDVI) WITH THE AMOUNT OF SOIL MOISTURE (Case Study of Rice Field Drought in Garut)

Drought is included as one of major natural disasters related to the change of precipitation level and water budget condition. Garut consists of the agricultural area and rice fields that depends on irrigation and rainfall. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation...

Garut consists of the agricultural area and rice fields that depends on irrigation and rainfall. Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) can be used to indicate the level of dryness and its relationship with soil moisture used for crop needs.

SPI index value for 3, 6, 9, and 12-monthly category show that throughout the year of 1994 and 2002 to 2003, the value of SPI reaches mild to extreme drought category. Meanwhile NDVI values shows no extreme drought (no value close to -1) in the study. However the value keeps on declining at a time of drought events occured according to SPI. Soil moisture values were also seen decreased after SPI and NDVI decreased.

Results of this study show that there are drought occurence happened during the years used for research according to both indices. SPI indicates the occurence of drought up to extreme levels in 1994 and 2003. The NDVI index shows the occurence of drought in the rice fields area but not to the extreme level. Both types of indices showed positive correlation to soil moisture. Correlation of SPI values with soil moisture is at 0.421392 and correlation of NDVI values with soil moisture is at 0.21988. text
