STUDY THE EFFECT OF PERLITE AS A NATURAL POZZOLAN ON COMPRESSION STRENGTH OF MORTAR SPECIMEN

Perlite are glassy volcanic rocks that rich in amorphous SiO2. The use of perlite in portland cement will increase the value of nonmetallic mineral resources. The properties of perlite are influenced by the location and it’s formation. This study aims to improve the quality of portland cement by...

The use of perlite in portland cement will increase the value of nonmetallic mineral resources. The properties of perlite are influenced by the location and it’s formation. This study aims to improve the quality of portland cement by using natural resource such as perlite rocks as natural pozzolan. XRD and XRF characterizations was conduct to determine the chemical composition of perlite. The effect of the addition of pearlite was observed from compressive strength of cement portand – perlite mortar specimens. Reduction of portland cement in the mortar specimens up to 50%, replaced by perlite. The compressive test was done at the age of specimens 7 days, 28 days, and 60 days. The XRD and XRF result indicate that perlite is an amorphous compound which chemical composition mostly consist of SiO2. The compressive strength of the specimens rise by increasing the age of the specimen. Addition of 30% perlite increase the compressive strength from 25.4 MPa to 28.9 MPa at the age 28 days. Calcium Silicate Hydrate (CSH) phase in the specimens rise as the increasing of compressive strength based on XRD analysis. The addition more than 30% perlit is no longer optimal to increase the compressive strength of the specimen as the number of portlandite / Calcium Hydroxide (CH) decrease. <br /> text
