Summary: | Riparian areas plays an important role in determining the quality of river ecosystems. The function of riparian areas is influenced by vegetation conditions and soil characteristics. Research on riparian vegetation along Cikapundung River was conducted with the aim to describe the abundance of vegetation; identify the existence of invasive species; describe the conditions of edaphic environment; and study the relationship between vegetation and environmental conditions. For plot design and data collection, Cikapundung river is segmented into 100 segments from upstream to downstream with the length of each segment is 400 m. In each segment, observations were taken on a plot 20 mx 5 m placed parallel to the right and left of the river. Vegetation analysis was recorded on herbaceous, shrub and tree life forms. Data collection of vegetation include species name, coverage and number of individual for tree only. Vegetation abundance is described through species richness, diversity index (H') and vegetation coverage. Edaphic environmental (soil) were measured for pH, organic content and bulk density. The results show there are 335 species found in riparian areas along Cikapundung River. In general, both species richness and diversity index (H ') of herbaceous plants are higher than shrubs and trees. Total of vegetation coverage decreased from upstream to downstream. The existence of invasive species is about 7% (23 species) of the total species found in riparian areas along Cikapundung River. Riparian soil conditions show average neutral pH, decreased organic content and increased bulk density of soil from upstream to downstream. The relationship between vegetation coverage and soil condition shows positive correlation on pH and herb coverage, soil organic matter and shrub coverage, bulk density and tree basal cover, meanwhile negative correlation between shrub coverage with pH and bulk density. |
