Description
Summary:Starch-assisted SnO2-based Nanofiber has been successfully synthesized using sol-gel method. The nano size has high surface to weight ratio so that it has a large contact space. So then, nanofiber gained from the experiment can be used in some specific applications, for example anode coating in solar panel, gas sensing material, etc.

Composition percentage of the constituent compounds has a big role in the microscopic structure and morphology of the synthesized nanofiber. The optimal composition in this experiment is 1:10, with 1 unit mass of precursor and 10 unit mass of starch. Urea is added as the source of ammonium and act as the catalyst of the reaction. Also, to prevent hydrolysis, some drops of HNO3 acid are added in the beginning of the whole process.

In order to gain the desirable structure and morphology of nanofiber, the sample needs enough space for the precursor to make bonds and form nanofiber structure. The nanofiber structure synthesized in this experiment is already observed for 1:10 composition and has the smallest diameter of 31nm. As for 1:1 composition, nanofiber has not been formed and it is agglomerated instead. Also, nanofiber gained in 1:10 composition is still not optimal and also lacks of homogenous structure. This could be easily observed by looking at the SEM pictures that have undesired morphology. XRD characterization already confirmed that SnO2 compound is the basis components of the tested nanofiber samples.
