VERTICAL STRUCTURE OF INTERNAL WAVES IN OCEAN

Internal waves are waves that occur within the ocean body. Internal waves characteristic are determined by two main factors, those are density difference (related to stratification frequency N) and Coriolis effect f. Internal waves characteristic are determined by two main factors, those are density difference (related to stratification frequency N) and Coriolis effect f. In this final project, vertical structure of internal waves were studied under rigid-lid approximation. In the case of constant N with N2 > f2, monochromatic waves occur with frequency ω, with f2 <ω2 < N2. In this situation, internal waves propagates diagonally with water surface and ocean bottom act as wave re ectors. Similar analysis is conducted using stratification frequency N data of laut Mediterannean bagian barat. Vertical modes were calculated numerically, and we obtained the following results: high frequency waves were concentrated at depth when ω2 < N2 and low frequency waves were concentrated at the lower part of ocean body, where N is nearly constant. In this situation, wave amplitude and wavelength are inversely proportional to ω2 - N2. text
