Description
Summary:Scaffold is a three dimensional structure that can be used as temporary supporting media in body tissue repairmen process. Some properties that must be owned by the scaffold are porous, biocompatible, biodegradable, bioactive, and have sufficient mechanical strength to sustain the new tissue growth. In this present study, the scaffold will be synthesized for bone tissue repairmen using alginate, chitosan, and carbonate apatite as the base materials. Alginate and chitosan are two natural polymeric materials that are biocompatible and biodegradable that contributes in giving the scaffold flexibility and mechanical strength properties. Carbonate apatite is one of the minerals that was found in bones, so its use on a scaffold intended to trigger the growth of new bone tissue more rapidly. The variation ratio of alginate and chitosan used in this study was 100% alginate, 2:1. 1:1, 1:2, and 100% chitosan with the same mass of carbonate apatite for each variation, which is 0,1 grams. The results of mixing the three ingredients were then freeze-dried in order to obtain the porous characteristic of the scaffold. The FTIR test result showed that a stable scaffold was successfully synthesized using alginate, chitosan, and carbonate apatite due to the unchanged functional groups which represent the existence of such materials after the combining process. SEM test results showed that; first, porous scaffold was successfully

synthesized using the freeze drying methode; second, the variations in the composition of alginate and chitosan as well as the addition of carbonate apatite affect the structure of the scaffold. The 1:1 composition between alginate and chitosan tend to create a denser scaffold compared to the other composition.
