Description
Summary:Coal is one of the most important source of energy in the world. In Indonesia, coal is used to generate electricity and as a fuel for cement production. Coalification begin with deposition of peat, at this process any organic and inorganic of non coal-forming materials may have deposited simultaneously and found in coal nowadays. Therefore, in this research one of the coal impurities that disrupts mining operation in PT Bukit Asam (Persero) coal mine, batupack, will be discussed. Batupack term never been known in mining industries but there are some others similar impurities, which are coal ball and dopplerite. Batupack and its coal-bearing sediments would be analyzed using some methods, ICP-INAA, XRD, and microscopy analysis to determine the elements and minerals.

All of the analysis show the dominant material of batupack is silica in the form of quartz. Quartz is observed filling the fracture, based on microscopic analysis, indicate the quartz crystallized after entering the fracture in solution phase. Compaction of the coal layer causes discharge of water resulting enrichment of silica in the coal layer that undergoes crystallization at a deeper depth.
