Summary: | Annona muricata L., known as soursop, is a plant in family of Annonaceae which have been proven to contain chemical and bioactive compounds that can be used as traditional medicine. Extract of Annona muricata leaves (EAML) has also been confirmed to have antibacterial activity against gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria. In this study, composite fibers were produced from cellulose acetate (CA) and polyvinylpirolidone (PVP) as a polymeric matrix and incorporated by EAML through electrospinning process. Electrospinning is one of the techniques used in producing fibers up to nano size and is applicable to produce wound dressing mats. Wound dressing with fiber morphology with some antibacterial agent inside was very important concerning protection from bacteria and the ability to synthesize protein in the wound healing process. Composite fibers of PVP/CA/EAML synthesised from PVP/CA polymer blended in 6/4 ratio and added EAML with ratio of 20:1, 20:2 and 20:3 (w/w). This study showed that we: (a) successfully produced electrospun of PVP/CA/EAML composite fibers with average fiber diameter of 289-527 nm, (b) electrospun of PVP/CA/EAML have a swelling degree, pH and Young’s modulus as eligible as wound dressing, (c) showed an in-vitro antibacterial activity toward S. aureus and S. epidermidis. The process parameters for executing the electrospinning process were voltage of 8 kV, flow rate of 0.2 mL/h and distance between collector to injection of 12 cm. |
