THE EFFECTIVITY COMPARISON OF GARLIC (Allium sativum L.) AND TURMERIC (Curcuma domestica Val.) EXTRACT COMBINATIONS TO SIMVASTATIN FOR LIPOPROTEIN PROFILE IMPROVEMENT IN DYSLIPIDEMIC PATIENTS

Dyslipidemia is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, the number one cause of death globally. Dyslipidemia is characterized by presence of lipid abnormalities in blood: elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and reduced HDL cholesterol. Treatment of dyslipidemia can reduce th...

Dyslipidemia is characterized by presence of lipid abnormalities in blood: elevated total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, triglyceride, and reduced HDL cholesterol. Treatment of dyslipidemia can reduce the risk of of heart disease by 30% over a 5-year period. Although the benefits of lipid-lowering therapy have been demonstrated most conclusively in person with cardiovascular disease, lipid-lowering therapy is effective even in person without clinically apparent cardiovascular disease. A previous study showed that administration of combination of garlic and turmeric extracts improved the lipoprotein profile in dyslipidemic patients with type-2 diabetes. The objective of this study is to investigate the effectiveness of combination of garlic and turmeric extracts compare with simvastatin as standard for lipoprotein profile improvement in dyslipidemic patients.<p>The design of the clinical test was randomized, double-blinded, parallel, and controlled trial. Dietically uncontrollable dyslipidemic patients were divided into two groups: the group I received a combination of extracts in the daily dose of 2.4 g and the group II received simvastatin in the daily dose of 5 mg. Therapy was performed for 12 weeks. The patients were underwent a regular laboratorial check-up every two weeks. The observed parameter consisted of body weight, blood pressure, lipoprotein profile, blood glucose, liver function, renal function, and hematology profile.<p>The combination of extracts significantly reduced total cholesterol and LDL-C, however, this reductions were not as high as that simvastatin. No significant differences on alteration of HDL-C, trygliceride and body mass index between the treatments. <br /> text
