MOF-5 or 𝑍𝑛4𝑂(𝐶6𝐻4(𝐶𝑂𝑂)2)3 which is formed from 𝑍𝑛2+ and terephthalic acid (𝐶6𝐻4(𝐶𝑂𝑂𝐻)2) has specific surface area 3800 m2/g. MOF-5 has micron cube shape morphology and cubic structure crystal phase. In this final project, MOF-5 was synthesized using solvothermal method with time reactions varied 20, 24, and 28 h at 100oC and 1.5, 3, 4.5 and 8 h at 150oC to investigate the effect the process parameters on morphology and purity of the resulting phase. The effect of polyvynilpyrrolidone concentration (0, 0.1 and 0.5 mM) on morphology and crystal structure of MOF-5 have been explored in these experiments. The resulting samples were characterized using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), and Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). This final project revealed that at 100oC, crystal structure of MOF-5 didn’t form, while at 150 oC it did form. The longer the solvotermal duration, the higher the percentage of MOF-5 phase formed. Addition of PVP at a concentration of 0.1 mM resulted in the growth of MOF-5 on surface {100} lead to increase the size of cubic MOF-5. At a 0.5 mM PVP concentration not only increase the growth on {100} lead to further increase size of cube but also created {111} facet so that the morphology of MOF-5 cut at each corner of the cube. text |
