REVITALIZATION OF SEMARANG HISTORIC QUARTER WITH PLACEMAKING APPROACH

Ancient site or historic quarter of the old city as part of the urban space that is realized from the architectural history of city, has an important role in the development of the wealth architecture. The persistence of the quarter morphology and its ancient buildings are relics of history and a reflection of its culture. To retain the existing values, then the existence of the historic quarter should be preserved, both physically and activities. In the case of Kota Lama Semarang, the historic quarter looks dead as a result of degradation. Degradation in Kota Lama Semarang covers various aspects, including physical aspects, functionality, location, image of the site, economic, and social aspects. To anticipate the negative condition, revitalization of the historic quarter needs to be done. In the other hand, revitalization of the historic quarter should consider the rules of cultural heritage conservation. In the realm of urban design are focused on the revitalization of physical intervention that improved the growth of social and economic activity. Physical revitalization is actually only able to create a space, but the business revitalization of the historic quarter is expected to create a place for a life formed by the places that create a variety of activities and identity. Therefore, the used of place-making approach where the revitalization of the historic quarter that considering the physical aspect, activity, and identity should be implement to made a good revitalization that not only beautify the area, but also capable to be an interesting site. . The identification of potential and design problems are based on the determination of the components, principles and design criteria that derived from the literature review and case studies. Design components that associated with the design area is a physical intervention; building code; circulation and parking; land use; pedestrian path; open space; morphology and attractors. In the case study, the revitalization of Kota Lama Semarang has a vision that is : "Old City of Semarang as a vibrant and responsive historic quarter". This vision can be achieved with the main strategies such as : Set strategy Kota Lama Semarang become destinations for the visitors / tourists and local communities; creating an anchor to capture the movement of visitors from the station and from the city center of Semarang. The anchor then will create a movement and an activity in the Old City of Semarang. Preserved identity by optimizing node and landmark of the area as an anchor and maintain morphology of Kota Lama Semarang as an area that was built in the colonial period; physical interventions on the building by preservation, renovation, infill, demolition, and adaptive reuse and realignment with regard visual continuity. This studies are expected to improve a new perspective in the revitalization of the historic quarter by providing recommendations ideas and related solution to the revitalization of Kota Lama Semarang. Place-making approach used to revive the historic quarter of Semarang by improving the quality of urban space, as well as creating a historic quarter that responds to the user, thus indirectly to protect cultural heritage assets and encourage the creation of economic and social activities.
