As one of the major economy source in the mining sector, South Sumatra has a large amount of potential coal, which is about 22,4 billion tons. However, this potential is not matched by the level of production (only about 15 million tons per year). Changing transportation mode, high cost, and slow process transporting are one of the key factors that led coal production can’t reach the actual potential. Therefore, design of Simpang-Mariana rail road is that transportation process can be more quick and efficient.

Simpang-Mariana railway is a single track class I railway with 1.067 mm gauge width and 33,088 km length. The railway is planned to have 11 horizontal and 15 vertical curves. The railway structure consist of R 54 railway, double elastic fastening, concrete sleeper for the track, wood sleeper for bridges and switch, 30-cm-thicked ballast and 45-cm-thicked subbalast. The side drainage shape is trapezium and concrete-pipe-shaped culverts. In this rail road design there will be a mid station constructed that have 3 track and Mariana Station that use loop system for unloading in form of RCD (Rotary Circle Dumper). The used switchs in both stations are W 12 type with R = 300 m radius. text
