To modelling the condition and quality of a reservoir, the reservoir characterization is used to determine the values of elastic properties. Therefore, to relate the elastic parameters that reflect the quality of the reservoir with the permeability parameters, first, an approach with Raymer-Hunt-Gardner and Krief modeling is being used so that the values of bulk modulus and shear modulus are obtained from each model. Then, the value of Kmin and μmin of both approaches are used as bounds to determine K min and μ min from Hashin-Shtrikman method to be used for further data processing. Moreover, The Hashin-Shtrikman method also estimates the values of K clay, μ clay, K quartz, and μ quartz from volume fraction of XRD data to ensure its value reasonable in accordance with the results. From XRD data it is shown that pore geometry and clay content also affect Vp and Vs. The comparable parameter with clay content is rho dry / rho min (ρ dry/ρ min). consolidation factor (alpha) and critical porosity are used to find the best pore geometry parameter as an indicator of reservoir quality in this research area, located in Balikpapan Formation, Kutai Basin, East Kalimantan, by plotting the parameters as colorkey on log permeability to porosity. The quality of reservoir depends on porosity and permeability wherein a high permeability and porosity indicate good quality reservoir. The result of this study concluded that the critical porosity (φ) / (rho dry / rho min) is the best elastic parameter in order to identifying the quality of the sandstone reservoir text
