Summary: | Ilmenit with the chemical formula FeTiO3 is one of the potential mineral mines in Indonesia. Ilmenit is one of the most important elements in the extraction of Titanium. Composition of ilmenit consists of 36.8% Fe, 31.6% Ti, and 31, 6% O [1]. In Indonesia, mineral ilmenit found in the results by products of tin mining in Bangka Island with the content of ilmenit is 86%. Ilmenit can be processed directly to make a Titanium Dioxide (TiO2) for the use of a greater variety. The use of titanium in the form of synthetic TiO2 rutil or anatase tetragonal very widely used in industries such as whitening pigmentsand primary ingredient for electronic ceramics (BaTiO3). Furthermore, synthetic TiO2 useful as a raw material for the manufacture of TiO2 polimeric precursors which is very important for advanced ceramic materials, such as optical coatings (film-optic), electro-optic materials and polymer composite materials ceramic (Ceramer). In this experiment, from ilmenit to TiO2 processing methods used is caustic fusion that includes four main stages are caustic fusion, water washing, acid leaching, and crystallization. Caustic fusion parameters used in this experiment is the molar ratio TiO2: NaOH = 1: 6, temperatur caustic fusion 450°C, fusion time for 2 hours. Furthermore, the three experimental conditions distinguished by the variation of the concentration of H2SO4 used as acid leaching. The resulting sample will be analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively (SEM / EDX, XRD). Based on experiments that was carried out, recovery of each sample was obtained is influenced by the acidity of leaching conditions. The maximum TiO2 composition obtained is 84.38%.Based on the analysis of ilmenite samplethere are some minerals such as FeTiO3, TiO2, and SnO2.The composition of calcinations process contain TiO2, N, Na2O, SO3, and FeO. The best experiment is obtained which leaching concentration of H2SO4 9 M with the recovery 21.88%. |
