Summary: | Organochlorine insecticide is a compound that very persistent to the environment, has a relatively low cost, and highly effective in killing pests. Therefore, organochlorine insecticide is widely used in several countries, especially in agriculture countries. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) USA, organochlorine insecticide might be in the human body in a relatively long period of time and easily bioaccumulated into the fatty tissues (Swackhamer et al., 1988). Exposure of organochlorine insecticide to the human body occurs in several ways, such as by eating food and drinking water that containing organochlorine residues, absorption through the skin surface, as well as by inhaling directly to organochlorine residues. Inhalation is an important
route of exposure to toxic chemicals, especially in the workplace. The society of Kertasari District has main activities, namely farming fields. From the activities,
exposure to excessive use of organochlorine insecticide might be occured. Organochlorine insecticides that were detected in the field, namely lindane, heptachlor, aldrin, endosulfan, DDT, dieldrin, and endrin, with each highest value of exposures were 2.1 x 10-5 mg/m3, 6.235 mg/m3 x10-6, 1.926 x10-5 mg/m3, 4.62 x 10-6 mg/m3, 4.35 x 10-6 mg/m3, 2.77 x 10-6 mg/m3, and 4.17 x 10-5 mg / m3. Those exposures were still considered in very low value and still below of TLVTWA issued by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH). Exposure of organochlorine has a direct and significant relationship to the intake value of organochlorine through inhalation. Organochlorine
insecticides that were detected in research, proving that organochlorine insecticides were still used, despite being banned. |
