Description
Summary:Zircon with chemical formula ZrSiO4 is the ninth most abundant material in the world with great potential reserves in Indonesia. Zircon is a by product of tin mining. Currently zircon began to be developed commercially. This is because zircon has beneficial properties and characteristics, various kinds of products of zircon are widely used in industry. One type of product from the processing of zircon is zirconyl

oxychloride (ZOC). ZOC has an important role in industrial world, especially advanced ceramics industry, for example as a precursor for the manufacturing of

other zirconium salts, raw material of pure zirconia, the application in textile dyeing, oil-field acidizing, antiperspirant, water repellents, pigmented layer of TiO2, as well as the basic material manufacture of thin film layer of ZrO2, SOFC (Solid Oxide Fuel Cell), PSZ (Partially-Stabilized Zirconia), and oxygen sensors.

In this experiment, decomposition of zircon to ZOC processing methods used are caustic fusion through crystallization path covers 5 main stage are caustic fusion phase, water washing, Na removal, acid leaching, then crystallization and recrystallization. The process consists of 27 experimental conditions those are

distinguished by variation of parameters to be used of crystallization concentration, mole ratio of ZrO2: HCl, and HCl concentration used during acid leaching. The

sample obtained will be analyzed visually and quantitatively (SEM/EDX, AAS). Based on experiments that have been done, the physical of ZOC and value of recovery obtained from each sample is influenced by the level of acidity and content of impurities. The value of recovery is directly proportional to the rate of

crystallization. Maximum recovery obtained is 77.468% and minimum recovery is 41,318%. Based on the analysis of samples by SEM/EDX and AAS, the best experimental condition at mole ratio ZrO2: HCl = 1:6, concentration of HCl is 3M, and concentration of crystallization is 160 g / L.
