SYNTHESIS OF PHENYL PROPANE MOIETY OF SILYMARIN BY USING EUGENOL AS STARTING MATERIAL

Almost all of the land in Indonesia is covered with essential oil-producing plants. Essential oils are volatile oils which are obtained from extracts of plant tissues such as leaves, flowers, fruit, bark, and roots by steam distillation. Volatile oils most contain aliphatic sesquiterpenes, oxygenate...

Essential oils are volatile oils which are obtained from extracts of plant tissues such as leaves, flowers, fruit, bark, and roots by steam distillation. Volatile oils most contain aliphatic sesquiterpenes, oxygenated hydrocarbons and aromatic hydrocarbons. One of essential oil-producing plants grow in Indonesia is Cloves (Syzygium aromaticum) which are producing clove oil. Therefore, Indonesia

becomes one of the world’s largest clove oil producing country. Eugenol is the major component of clove oil and generally obtained by steam distillation from leaves, buds, and stems of Cloves. Eugenol has unique C6-C3 skeleton with methoxy, hydroxyl and allyl moiety attached to the aromatic ring. Its allyl moiety also can be transformed into valuable building blocks in synthesis of biologically active compounds, such as sylimarin, an active ingredient in antihepatitic drug. Based on statistical data, it shows that 28 million people in Indonesia are infected by hepatitis B and C and 14 million of them are potential to become chronic. In addition, 1,4 million of those chronic people are also potentially suffering to live in liver cancer.

Therefore, this study aimed to obtain some derivatives of eugenol which are potential as phenyl propane unit of silymarin. Silymarin consists of two units: flavonoid unit and phenyl propane (C6-C3) unit. Based on retrosynthetic analysis of sylimarin, it could be synthesized by utilizing eugenol which has structural

similarity to the phenyl propane unit of sylimarin. In this research, eugenol has been transformed to coniferyl alcohol derivative text
