Description
Summary:Sustainable development requires resource utilization which considers economic, social and ecological aspects. Forest damage characterized by the decline of contribution of forestry sub-sector to the national GDP shows that the use of forests has not observing the principles of sustainable development. Forest management using approach of large corporation has failed in guaranteeing sustainable forestry development so that an approach actively involving forest communities been invented. The approach directed impact on public awareness on the importance of environment resulting in people's interest in managing the forest as private land (private forests) by using the principle of agroforestry system. Products of agroforestry in District Bantul, especially in Sub-district Dlingo, has been instrumental in supplying raw materials for small/domestic wood industries. However, the industries are experiencing difficulties because wood production is decreasing in the region. This indicates a threat to the sustainability of agroforestry in Sub-district Dlingo.

This study aims to review to what extent the agroforestry in Sub-district Dlingo sustains to enable identification of problems and invent possible development efforts to ensure agroforestry sustainability. The study assesses 7 aspects of agroforestry against 45 indicators of sustainability by comparing existing condition with ideal/expected indicators set for sustainable agroforestry.

The study finds that agroforestry in Sub-district Dlingo has various sustainable indicator categories of which 30 high, 14 moderate and 1 low. Thus, sustainability prospect of agroforestry in Sub-district Dlingo is high to moderate. The study also finds aspects of threat to sustainable agroforestry in Dlingo namely farmer, cultivation technology, business management, market demand, institutional capacity and regulatory and policy while supporting aspects are availability of land and social and cultural values. As the threats exist agroforestry development approach involving all stakeholders such as farmers, farmer groups, agricultural/forestry supervisors, village officers, government, NGOs and industry practitioners is pivotally needed.
