Ciptagelar ancestor have ngalalakon tradition or moving of the midst settlements. Until today, ngalalakon has occurred 19 times and Kasepuhan Ciptagelar become the latest settlements since year 2000. Geographically, Kasepuhan Ciptagelar located in the highlands of Halimun Mountain as one of framer of Mountains Kendeng in West Java. Kasepuhan Ciptagelar is an indigenous settlements based on rice culture. Rice culture is a system of belief and religion of peoples that affects all aspects of their life, including settlement. <br /> This dissertation aims to reveal the influence of the rice culture on settlement of Kasepuhan Ciptagelar (1) by exploring the ngalalakon meaning and role as a dwelling tradition and (2) by exploring the spatial concept of the rice culture community in Kasepuhan Ciptagelar. This research used a qualitative approach with the strategy of ethnography. Prior to the field, researchers always defocus and performed reconnaissance. Data collected through interview process, participant observation, and ethnographic records. Data were divided in to two groups, namely data of the belief system and data of rice culture activities. The first group data were analyzed by thick description approach. The second group data were gradually analyzed by domain and taxonomy analysis techniques. Analysis results were integrated simultaneously to construct a theory. <br /> The results of this research show that: (I). Ciptagelar settlement designed based on rice culture, with dry-land rice as the main reference although acculturation between rice culture of dry-land rice and wet-land rice has occurred. (II). Pancer-pangawinan as reference spatial concepts, consists of seven concept which interdependence, namely sakuren, paparakoan, suwung, ngalasuwung, pangawinan, ambivalent, and pancer; (a) sakuren is a prerequisite of pancer-pangawinan; (b) paparakoan is setting and bridge in order to reach suwung; (c) ngalasuwung is a pattern of spatial movement as the process of seeking, finding, and bringing sakuren to suwung; (d) suwung is destination of ngalasuwung; (e) pangawinan is process of arrange a meeting or union sakuren in suwung space; (f) ambivalent is a quality of pangawinan results; (g) pancer is pangawinan goal; pancer is safety. (III). Leuit Jimat which occupies suwung space has a rola as pungpuhunan, axis mundi, sawen, at once as imago mundi. (IV). Networking of protector elements constructs hierarchical settlement territorial system. (VI). Talapak become a prerequisite of settlements establishment. <br /> This dissertation contribute to novelty of architecture in terms of: (I) sakuren as critical review of the existing dualism. (II). Paparakoan as original spatial concept of Sundanese. (III) Pancer-pangawinan as spatial concept reference of rice culture community. (IV). Leuit Jimat as movable axis mundi. (V) Talapak as prerequisite on Sundanese settlement establishment. (VI) Ngalasuwung and ngalalakon are pattern of spatial movement to build vertical space. (VII) Thick description approach as way to read data of meta-empirical on work tradition. (VIII) Pancer-pangawinan as a strategy of developing new culture. text
