Description
Summary:This study was conducted to test the effect of peroxinitrite addition into the culture medium on growth kinetics, lutein and carotenoid concentration and productivity of lutein and carotenoid. Chlorella pyrenoidosa was cultured in a photobioreactor. Variation of peroxinitrite concentration [ONOO-] were 0.01 mM, 0.1 mM, 1.0mM, and without [ONOO-] as control. Lutein and carotenoid content content was analyzed by spectrophotometer. The results indicated that the addition of peroxinitrite increased carotenoid and lutein concentration but were insignificant. The concentration of lutein could increase up to 3.8 mg / g DW on the 13th cultivation with addition of 0.1 mM peroxinitrite. Carotenoid concentration increased up to 24 mg / g DW on the 13th cultivation by concentration 0.1 mM peroxinitrite administration. The maximum lutein productivity was 42.6 mg/ L.year and maximum carotenoid productivity was 269.5 mg / L.year which obtained in microalgae with the addition of 0,1 mM peroxinitrite. It can be concluded that the addition of peroxinitrite into the culture medium could insignificantly increased the concentration of lutein and carotenoid productivity of C. pyrenoidosa, yet it could decrease the growth rate of C. pyrenoidosa at low concentrations (0.01 mM to 0.1 mM of peroxinitrite) and lethal at high concentration (1.0 mM peroxinitrite).
