In MT 1-D case, model parameters are layer resistivities and layer thicknesses. <br /> <br /> Non-linear inversion with linear approach (iterative least square) and simulated annealing (SA) are both used to model synthetic and real MT data. Information from Jacobian matrix, i.e. first order partial derivative of forward modelling function, and data misfit are used to update an initial model iteratively. In SA, a model randomly selected from the model space is evaluated whether it is accepted or rejected. The evaluation is done probabilistically, i.e. model with lower misfit has larger probability to be accepted <br /> <br /> Iterative linearized method has dependency on the initial model, such that optimal solution will be obtained if the initial model is not close enough to the solution. This condition is more severe for modelwith many layers Sa method is relatively more stable or robust such that it always convergent to an optimal model. text
