Summary: | Energy drink is defined as dietary supplement containing multivitamin, macronutrient, taurine, caffeine

added with herbs such as ginseng and ginger in the form of liquid formulation or powder and tablet

dissolved into beverage, with 100 kkal energy contained in each package. The drink is used to add

stamina, fitness, stimulate metabolism, maintain health and is consumed during working or after

exercise. Consumption of energy drinks started to increase when one of the most famous energy drink

brand was introduced in market in 1997. Research in US found that 51% of 496 college students showed

that they drank energy drink more than once a month. Judging from the popularity of energy drinks

among college students, it is necessary to study the dependence potential of energy drink in college

students. This study was aimed to investigate the dependence potential of energy drinks among a

sample of college student. This is a descriptive study with collecting data from college students based on

questionnaire filled by each respondent in the period of March 2017 to July 2017. The data was then

analyzed to get the information about dependence level based on criteria of DSM V (Diagnostic and

Statistical Manual of Mental Disorder). Total respondents in this study were 184 respondents. Results

showed that 58% respondents were women and 42% were men. Out of 6 energy drink brands studied,

brand E was the most consumed energy drink with the composition of taurine, caffeine, inositol, vitamin

B and sugar. Twenty seven percent respondents consumed energy drink more than once a month. Based

on dependence severity criteria of DSM V, 53% respondents did not experience dependence, 30%

respondents experience mild dependency, 10% respondents experienced moderate dependency and 7%

respondents exeperienced severe dependence. Thus, based on dependence severity criteria in DSM V,

53% respondents did not belong in any category, meanwhile 47% met the dependence criteria. The

results indicated that although more than half of the respondents were categorized non-dependent,

dependence on energy drink consumption in college students remains to be considered. |
