Rolling element bearing is widely used in the rotating equipment and considered as one of critical components in rotating equipment. Other than rolling element bearing, gearbox is also widely used for the rotating equipment to achieve the desired operating speed. Gearbox will introduce noise which interfere with the vibration signal produced by rolling element bearing. This condition will cause difficulty in vibration analysis to detect the vibration signature of rolling element bearing defect. In industrial application, vibration analysis method is the common method that used to detect the vibration signature of rolling element bearing defect. However, this method is considered ineffective for low speed application. For this condition, there is another method that considered more effective which is acoustic emission method.
In this research, an experiment was performed on both test rig with and without gearbox using vibration analysis method and acoustic emission method to detect the vibration signature of rolling element bearing defect. Rolling element bearing with artificial damage on outer ring and inner ring will be installed on each test rig. The shaft speed that selected on this experiment was 500 rpm, 100 rpm, and 30 rpm. On each shaft speed, the effectiveness on each method to detect the vibration signature of rolling element bearing defect will be compared.
The research shows that on each shaft speed on the test rig with and without gearbox, the acoustic emission method is more effective to detect the vibration signature of rolling element bearing defect comparing with vibration analysis method. Furthermore, the overal value of acoustic emission method can be used to represent the acoustic emission resulted from rolling element bearing. Thus, it can be used as trending and alarm parameter to detect rolling element bearing defect.
