Habitat Preference Mapping of Javan Deer (Rusa timorensis, de Blainville 1822) in Taman Buru Gunung Masigit Kareumbi

Taman Buru Gunung Masigit Kareumbi (TBMK) was designated as a conservation area and functioned as hunting park in 1976 and inaugurated in 1998. Javan deer (Rusa timorensis, de Blainville 1822) is one of big game in TBMK that has been introduced since 1966. But until now, hunting has not been done su...

Javan deer (Rusa timorensis, de Blainville 1822) is one of big game in TBMK that has been introduced since 1966. But until now, hunting has not been done sustainably in TBMK because of inadequate Javan deer population. There is an on going effort to develop the Javan deer population, and that is through game’s introduction. This introduction plan needs to be supported by information availability on the distribution of habitats favored by Javan deer. This study aims to map potential areas that is preferred by Javan deer in TBMK based on environmental’s physical factors such as land cover (TL), height (Kt), slope (Kl), distance from river (JS), distance from bush cover (JSk), and distance from roads, settlements and community gardens (JJKP). Mapping was done by scoring and weighting method using spatial analysis tools from ArcGIS 10 in study area of 1,097.70 ha. Each environmental factor is classified into several habitat preference classes with score of 1 point for the least favored class and 5 points for the most preferred class. After all factors are combined; habitat preference (HP) is obtained by weighting based on the relative importance of one environmental factor to other environmental factors (which is obtained through literature study). The weighting method is HP (100%) = 40% JJKP + 40% (50% TL + 30% JSK + 20% JS) + 20% (50% Kt + 50% Kl). The mapping results using three preference classes showed that 4.13% of the study area (45.3 ha) is categorized as less favorable, 76.69% favorable (841.8 ha) and 19.18% is highly favored (210.6 ha). The high percentage of favored and highly preferred habitats illustrate that physically the study area is highly potential to support the Javan deer introduction plan . text
